4. examples of my writing process

overview

The previous chapter presented the stages of the process and the elements of each stage in a fairly abstract way. This chapter presents three very different pieces of music and the process used in the creation of each. My hope is that you’ll see how the type of piece you’re writing can affect the process and how the process should be flexible, adaptable, and personal.

The pieces presented here are:

  • “In Other Words” – a rhythm section-based piece for small instrumental ensemble.
  • “Praça Onze” – from the Choro Suite,  the second movement of a piece for woodwind quintet.
  • “Retrato em Branco e Preto” – an arrangement of a Brazilian standard for studio orchestra, vocalist, and sax soloist.
