The New Cool

I’ve known John Wasson for years. We played together in the UNT One O’clock Lab Band and were Teaching Assistants together in the arranging program at UNT taught by Paris Rutherford. Back in the early 90s, John was playing in Mike Levin’s Dallas Brass and asked me to do a chart for them. The instrumentation was 5 horns with a drum set player who also played keyboard percussion. I wrote this chart but I don’t think they ever performed it. When John conceived the idea of the CoolBrass Jazztet, he felt this tune would be a good one for the band. I also did another piece for the record, an arrangement of an under rated tune by John Coltrane, called “Mr. Syms.” (Also see the album Windborne for another collaboration I did with John.)
